Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging (DEIB)

Since our founding in 1950, The Howard School has remained steadfast in our mission to provide children with language-based learning disabilities and learning differences an educational world with no boundaries, labels, or diminished expectations. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) work is at the very core of what we do at Howard-what we've always done-to ensure that children who learn differently, along with the adult community that surrounds and supports them, feel a deep sense of inclusion and belonging.

The Howard School's DEIB Steering Committee is composed of faculty and staff members from all areas of the School. The Committee is dedicated to supporting ALL members of The Howard School community. While this new committee was formed at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, the work itself is not new to Howard. In fact, for the past four consecutive years, Howard has been designated a No Place for Hate School by the Anti-defamation League (ADL).

DEIB Mission Statement

The Howard School is committed to fostering and nourishing a community of inclusion among students, staff, and families by honoring the diversity of human experience.

We value all dimensions of identity including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ability status, family dynamic, age, socioeconomic status, and cultural background.

To move our mission forward, we will:

  • Advance education and professional development for staff in areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Provide and cultivate an inclusive environment for all community members
  • Engage in equitable practices with partners in the education system and the broader community
