Savoring the Season of Growth

Savoring the Season of Growth
Jayla Johnson

May has a way of arriving all at once.

The calendar fills before we can even catch our breath: class parties, final projects, performances, awards, exams, transitions, graduations, end-of-year forms, summer plans, and the emotional weight of watching our children take one more step forward.

It is joyful. It is meaningful. It also is exhausting.

For parents, May can feel like a whirlwind. There is so much to attend, remember, celebrate, organize, and finish. And yet, tucked inside all of that motion are some of the most sacred moments of the school year.

This month, as we come to the end of our formal academic year, I want to gently invite all of us to slow down.

Not because there is less to do. There is not.

But because there is so much worth noticing.

I notice the child who once needed help walking into school and now moves through the hallways with confidence. I notice the student who found a friend, tried something hard, learned to advocate, finished the book, joined the team, stood on the stage, solved the problem, apologized, tried again, or simply grew in quiet ways that may not show up on a report card.

I notice the teachers who know your children deeply and have spent this year celebrating their strengths, supporting their challenges, and helping them become more fully themselves. I notice the friendships, the small victories, the inside jokes, the rituals, the messy backpacks, the final carpool waves, and the children who are just a little taller, wiser, braver, and more independent than they were in August.

At Howard, we often talk about transformation. We believe in celebrating children, transforming the learning experience, and developing lifelong strengths. But transformation rarely happens in one dramatic moment. More often, it happens slowly, through hundreds of ordinary days that only reveal their significance when we pause long enough to look back.

May gives us that invitation.

So in the midst of the chaos, I hope you will give yourself permission to savor this ending. Take the picture. Linger for the conversation. Watch your child’s face when they do not know you are watching. Let yourself feel the pride, the relief, the gratitude, and even the ache that comes with change.

Endings matter. They help us honor what has been built before we rush into what comes next.

Thank you for sharing your children with us this year. Thank you for trusting us, partnering with us, and believing in the work of this remarkable school community. As we close this academic year, I am deeply grateful for the growth we have witnessed, the challenges we have navigated together, and the joy of walking alongside your children.

May we all find a few moments this month to slow down, look around, and say: This mattered. This was good. Look how far they have come.
