A Successful Summer at The Howard School

Summer at The Howard School has been awesome; I can’t believe there are only 4 weeks left! 

We had one hundred and seventeen Summer Safari campers here for the month of June, twenty-two teachers here for Professional Development, and thirty-two High School students from Howard and beyond here to brush up on study skills, take the ACT, and practice for their driver’s license test. We resurfaced our driveway and parking lots (it’s like driving on silk now!). Our chickens laid their first eggs. Our garden grew huge squash, tons of tomatoes and the prettiest zinnias in town. 

We got to show off our campus and introduce our remarkable school to over 100 business, philanthropic, and educational Atlanta leaders as we hosted a stunning evening event to celebrate a deeply loved educator from the Metro. We confirmed professional partnerships with the Bagwell College of Education at Kennesaw State University. We cemented plans to host language educators and advocates from around the world in October for a three- day retreat to study and grow together. We learned that we are the distinguished recipients of the E.E. Ford Foundation grant application that we submitted to build an Innovation Playground which will bring more AI tools, virtual reality equipment, robotics club machinery, a laser cutter, and updated 3D printers to our students. We mapped out plans to celebrate our 75th birthday with a focus on honoring our rich history and preparing for the next generation of students who will be served by our school.  We launched the first formal Planned Giving initiative to ensure the longevity of our school and already have generous benefactors who have formally included us in their estate plans.

The Board of Trustees did the deep and powerful work of supporting a review and refresh of our mission. They created the platform for almost 20 teachers, parents, staff, and Board Members to meet all summer to create refreshed strategic goals and a clear vision for our future.

We are poised to grow in exciting ways—academically, and institutionally. Whether it's through innovative learning experiences, deepened community partnerships, or expanded support structures for our students, there is so much on the horizon. Be sure you make plans to attend Parent Information Night in August so you can come learn more about our refreshed mission and new strategic initiatives. 

Summer was, indeed, great. The only thing that will make it better is the arrival of August 11th. I am filled with excitement, gratitude, and great anticipation. The energy that comes with a fresh start is so nourishing; I already can imagine the joyful noise that soon will fill our hallways, the confident steps of students returning to familiar routines, and the courage of those who are stepping into something brand new.
There is so much on the horizon for our school and your children.
