Learn more about our school nurse, Colleen Ward, in this month's Spotlight.
What is your educational background?
I graduated from SUNY Oswego with a BA in psychology. I worked alongside doctors and nurses in a psychiatric emergency setting and realized I wanted to become a Registered Nurse. I went back to school in my late 20's and earned an Associates in Nursing at St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Syracuse, NY. Through The Howard School, I have worked to become a Certified CPR trainer with the American Heart Association and a Darkness to Light Facilitator.
What is your favorite Howard School memory?
My favorite memories at Howard are always when students are performing, being honored and giving back to others. Battle of The Bands, the Talent Show, Graduation and The Giving Ceremony always overwhelm me how proud I am of our students!
What do you enjoy most about being a school nurse?
No two days are the same! I absolutely love the fact that I have the opportunity to work with kids from age 6-18 yrs. Their needs are so varied and real. My job allows me to give back and make a difference in others' lives. To me there is nothing better than that!
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
As some of you know, I have 4 boys of my own! If I could have one superpower, it would be to fly like Superman. I often find myself needing/wanting to be in many places at once for my son's activities/events. If only I could fly from school to school or sports field to sports field....
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
What do you enjoy doing for fun/leisure?
I enjoy riding my bike, exploring all the Beltline has to offer with my kids, knitting and binge-watching a good series on Netflix.
